“Paint It Black”

Michael Allred's cover for FF #10 presents the Future Foundation's misfit squad — a blond teen, a small masked figure, a young woman in a blue-striped uniform, and a lightning-bolt-suited hero standing tall against a dramatic storm — perched atop a rocky outcropping, with a tiny armored figure (sporting a "4" emblem) looking up at them from below. The stark black-and-white contrast, punctuated by crackling lightning and Laura Allred's cool blue palette, gives the scene a striking, almost cinematic weight. Matt Fraction and the Allreds were doing genuinely inventive work with this corner of the Marvel NOW! universe, and this 2013 issue — titled "Paint It Black" — promises a chapter with plenty of atmosphere to match that bold visual confidence.
