Howard Chaykin's cover sets the tone immediately: a costumed space-hero figure in a retro rocket suit slumped on the ground, a crimson splatter behind his helmeted head, while a glamorous woman in lingerie, stockings, and heels stands coolly beside him, a pistol in her gloved hand. It's a pulpy, grown-up mix of showbiz glamour and sudden violence that makes "The Big Fade Out" feel like exactly the right title for this first chapter.
