Dave Cockrum was an American comics artist born on November 11, 1943, who became one of the most consequential visual architects in Marvel Comics history. He passed away on November 26, 2006.

Cockrum's path into professional comics led him to DC, where he made an early mark revamping the costumes of the Legion of Super-Heroes — work that showcased the design sensibility that would define his career. He brought that same gift to Marvel when he took over the X-Men in the 1970s, helping transform a struggling title into one of the publisher's flagship franchises. His tenure on *The Uncanny X-Men* produced an extraordinary run of co-creations: Nightcrawler, Storm, and Colossus joined the team under his pencil, and he later co-created the shape-shifting villain Mystique, as well as the antiheroine Black Cat. His character designs were simultaneously bold and functional, giving each figure a distinct personality that extended beyond the page.

Over a career spanning from 1972 onward and encompassing more than 500 credited issues — including work on *X-Men Classic* and *Soulsearchers and Company* — Cockrum remained a beloved and prolific contributor to the medium. His redesigns of superhero costumes in the 1970s and early 1980s set a standard for the field that still resonates today.
