Marvel Super-Heroes #86

The Hulk charges straight off this January 1980 cover of Marvel Super-Heroes #86, fists clenched and teeth gritted, framed dramatically within the looming dark shadow of the Golem that surrounds him like a threat closing in from all sides. The tagline "…In the Shadow of the Golem!" sets a wonderfully ominous tone, and the fiery orange background behind that massive silhouette gives the whole image a real sense of menace. With interior work by writer Roy Thomas and artist Herb Trimpe — and a cover rendered by Trimpe and Dave Cockrum — this is a satisfying slice of Marvel's early 1980s storytelling at its most visceral.
