“The Wizard of Oops!”

The concluding chapter of Dave Cockrum's four-issue limited series brings a wild, imaginative energy right to the cover, where a massive, wide-eyed woman's face looms over a chaotic pile of colorful fantasy characters — including Nightcrawler himself, a winged creature, a feral figure resembling Wolverine, and several others sprawled in comedic disarray. Cockrum's linework captures the playful, off-kilter tone perfectly, signaled even in the story's title, "The Wizard of Oops!" The whole image feels like a grand, slightly unhinged finale to one of Marvel's more inventive 1986 limited series.
