Howard Chaykin

Howard Victor Chaykin was born on October 7, 1950, and stands as one of American comics' most distinctive voices — equally accomplished as a writer and artist whose sensibility draws heavily from mid-century commercial illustration. He credits Robert Fawcett and Al Parker among his formative influences, alongside Gil Kane, the veteran artist who first hired the teenage Chaykin as a gofer at age nineteen and served as both employer and mentor during those early years.

From that apprenticeship, Chaykin gradually moved toward developing his own characters and projects, eventually working across virtually every major publisher in the industry — DC Comics, Marvel Comics, First Comics, and Epic Comics among them. His catalog spans more than 620 credited issues across five decades of active work, running from 1972 through the present. The titles most associated with his name — American Flagg!, Black Kiss, American Century, and Satellite Sam — share a preoccupation with media saturation, political cynicism, and adult sexuality rendered in his bold, design-conscious visual style. He also contributed to prominent Marvel properties including Punisher War Journal and Blade. Beyond print comics, his work extended into graphic books and television animation.
