DC Through the '80s: The End of Eras #[nn]
In "Smell of Brimstone, Stench of Death!", Alan Moore delivers a haunting, character-driven chapter in the saga of Superman’s final days, as Lois recounts the moment the Man of Steel faced his greatest trial—confronting a web of enemies led by a twisted Luthor, the Kryptonite Man, and the Legion of Super-Villains, only to uncover a truth that shattered him. With Curt Swan’s legendary art and the dynamic inks of Murphy Anderson and Kurt Schaffenberger, the emotional weight of Superman’s choice is rendered with timeless power, culminating in a moment of irreversible consequence. The cover, a collaborative effort by Swan, Hannigan, and Chaykin, captures the tragedy in stark, iconic detail.

Lois continues to relate how when Superman was holed up in the Fortress with his closest friends, being attacked by Brainiac (having taken over Luthor's body), the Kryptonite Man, and the Legion of Super-Villains, he realized who the mastermind behind it all was, and called on Mr. Mxyzptlk to show himself. Just as Superman sent Mxyzptlk into the Phantom Zone, Mxy fled to his own dimension, tearing himself apart. Having taken a life, Superman exposed himself to gold kryptonite and retired. The interview over, Lois, her husband Jordy, and their infant son Jonathan settle in for a quiet evening.
