“The Sirens of 7th Ave”

Marvel's War of the Worlds series roars into July 1973 with this pulse-racing installment, featuring "The Sirens of 7th Ave" — written by Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas with interior art by Howard Chaykin. The cover, penciled by Herb Trimpe and John Romita and inked by Romita and Mike Esposito, puts Killraven front and center — a red-haired warrior in a headband swinging into a snarling mob of green and purple alien creatures amid a ruined cityscape, while a blue-clad swordfighter leaps in the background and two mysterious women watch from the debris above. Rooted in H.G. Wells' enduring concepts, this "sword vs. science gone mad" series was clearly staking its claim as something genuinely different in Marvel's 1973 lineup.
