In "The Sleep of Reason," Hawkgirl races against time as ancient forces stir beneath the city—corpses rise in a cemetery, a museum is breached by a mysterious figure, and the past awakens in the form of a frail, desperate Hawkman. Walter Simonson’s gripping tale unfolds with haunting urgency, as Kendra confronts a mystery tied to Roderic’s obsession and the shocking return of Carter’s legacy. Howard Chaykin’s striking art, both in story and on the cover, brings a mythic weight to every panel.

Hawkgirl leaves the docks before the police come to pick up Khimaera, but not before Lt. Doucette admits to her that he also knows her identity. Later, Kendra and Oliver wonder why Roderic is hell-bent on acquiring the museum. In the cemetery, four corpses arise and begin to kill. In the museum one of Khimaera's minions, if that's who he truly is, steals a mace and pounds its haft onto the floor, energizing what appears to be the outlined figure of Hawkman. Kendra gets a call from Carter's phone and rushes to the museum, only to find an old, weak Hawkman begging for her help.
