Avengers 1959 #1
Marvel's five-part limited series kicks off with this Cold War-flavored opener, written and drawn by Howard Chaykin with colors by Jesus Aburtov. The cover assembles a striking group of operatives around a world map dotted with skull markers — a winged, masked figure snarls at the fore, flanked by a masked woman in red wielding a pistol, a soldier leveling an automatic rifle, a silver-haired woman and a dark-suited gunman in the background, and a steely one-eyed man dominating the foreground. It's a moody, espionage-charged ensemble portrait that sets the stage for a Marvel Universe rooted firmly in 1959.
