At Ground Zero, the five new Challengers are still unsure why they're here or why their minds are in synch. Hegemony leader Mae Nash Price sends Jessi Brydge and her proles to retrieve their lost agents, the Challs. When ordered to go with them, the Challs fight back, miraculously in tune with each other, and fighting with skills they didn't know they had. The retrieval fails and Brydge leaves before authorities arrive. The new Challengers are angry at being made ignorant puppets. Later, when a helicopter of thugs comes to retrieve them, they vow to go down fighting.
