Steven Murray — who publishes comics under the pen name Chip Zdarsky — was born on December 21, 1975, in Canada. Before making his mark in the comics industry, he spent more than a decade at the National Post as an illustrator and humorist, contributing the "Extremely Bad Advice" column and helming The Ampersand, the paper's online pop culture section, until 2014.

His transition into comics brought early self-published work including Prison Funnies and Monster Cops, but his profile rose considerably when he co-created Sex Criminals alongside writer Matt Fraction, serving as the series' artist. The book's sharp wit and bold visual sensibility established him as a distinctive voice in the medium. He has since worked across multiple publishers, writing Jughead for Archie Comics and contributing Howard the Duck, Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Life Story, Spider-Man: Spider's Shadow, and an acclaimed run on Daredevil for Marvel. His Batman work for DC Comics has become among his most visible ongoing contributions.

Zdarsky operates fluidly across both writing and visual art — a relative rarity in mainstream comics — and has occasionally worked under the additional pseudonym Todd Diamond. With credits spanning more than 325 issues between 2006 and the mid-2020s, his body of work reflects both commercial range and a consistent undercurrent of dark humor and genuine character investment.
