Avengers: Twilight was, by Zdarsky's own account, years in the making before its January 2024 debut, developed in close collaboration with artist Daniel Acuña under the editorial oversight of Tom Brevoort, with Martin Biro and Annalise Bissa as assistant and associate editors. The series was conceived as a self-contained six-issue miniseries set in the alternate future of Earth-24331, explicitly positioned by Marvel as accessible to new readers while rewarding longtime fans — part of a wave of prestige limited series Zdarsky produced for Marvel following his celebrated Daredevil run. Issue #4, released March 13, 2024, received a second printing (dated April 24, 2024), attesting to sustained reader demand across the miniseries.

Set on Earth-24331, a dystopian alternate future where superheroes were outlawed following 'H-Day,' an event in which Red Skull — allied with a preserved A.I. Ultron — orchestrated the deaths of most of Earth's heroes.
Issue #4 delivers the miniseries' central revelation: that Kyle Jarvis, James Stark's trusted father-figure and mentor, is actually Johann Shmidt (Red Skull) in disguise, who manipulated James for decades to consolidate control over America.
Tony Stark — kept alive as a disembodied head since H-Day — constructs a new improvised suit of armor in this issue, returning to full action as Iron Man for the first time in the series.
The Avengers Patrol — the state-sanctioned superhero team James Stark promoted publicly — is revealed in this issue to be entirely fabricated: holographic constructs that were part of Red Skull's media manipulation campaign.
James Stark (first appearance: Avengers: Twilight #1; first appearance as Iron Man: Avengers: Twilight #3) appears here as a continuing antagonist, confronted by Thor at the Raft before being privately unmasked to his true 'patron' by Red Skull at issue's end.
The issue features the full roster of the reconstituted Avengers: Captain America (Steve Rogers), Thor Odinson, Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), Hawkeye (Ramona Jones, formerly Bullseye), and the restored Iron Man (Tony Stark), alongside supporting Defenders members Luke Cage and Dr. Rosa Rogers.
