Zdarsky originally conceived the story as early as 2019, and the project was revealed to the public via a trailer at New York Comic Con 2023 before launching in January 2024, overseen editorially by Marvel VP Executive Editor Tom Brevoort. The series was deliberately constructed as a complete, self-contained six-issue arc on the prestige end of Marvel's publishing line, with every main cover painted by Alex Ross and interior art by Spanish illustrator Daniel Acuña, whose painterly, high-detail style drew widespread comparisons to the aesthetic of Kingdom Come. Issue #1 was successful enough to warrant a second printing before the series had even reached its midpoint, confirming strong audience demand for the project.
