Born on October 21, 1956, Paul Levitz has spent more than five decades as one of DC Comics' most enduring figures — writer, editor, and executive whose influence on the company extended far beyond any single title. He began contributing to comics in the early 1970s, and over a career spanning from 1973 into the 2020s, he received writing credits on more than 600 issues.
The Legion of Super-Heroes #298 (1983)
Levitz is most closely associated with the Legion of Super-Heroes, a sprawling ensemble cast set in the 30th century that he returned to repeatedly across multiple series, including *Legion of Super-Heroes*, *Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes*, and *Adventure Comics*. His work on *Worlds' Finest* and *Doctor Fate* further demonstrated his range with DC's deep bench of characters.
The Brave and the Bold #113 (1974)
As an executive, Levitz rose to become president of DC Comics, a role he held from 2002 to 2009. Working alongside publisher Jenette Kahn and managing editor Dick Giordano, he was instrumental in recruiting talent that helped reshape the company's output during the 1980s — bringing in writers Marv Wolfman and Alan Moore, artists George Pérez, Keith Giffen, and John Byrne, and editor Karen Berger, whose own contributions proved transformative. That collective effort fueled a significant revitalization of DC's superhero line during one of its most celebrated periods.
