“Slay Ride in the Sky”

Based on Kenneth Robeson's pulp hero The Avenger, this December 1975 DC series reaches its fourth issue with a breathtaking cover by Joe Kubert that says everything about the story's title, "Slay Ride in the Sky." A red biplane tears low over a city skyline while a white-haired figure clings to its wing in a desperate mid-air struggle — and the cover copy leaves no room for optimism: "No way for the Avenger to get down alive… No Way!" Interior art comes from Jack Kirby with inks by Mike Royer, making this a genuinely compelling meeting of pulp adventure and 1970s comics craft.
