DC Comics Presents #43

Brian Bolland's cover for this March 1982 team-up is a genuinely striking piece of comic art — the menacing, grinning visage of Mongul dominates the center as he clutches a glowing energy cube trapping a desperate Superman, while Legion of Super-Heroes members (including a blue-skinned heroine and several colorful Legionnaires) scramble through the starfield around him. The cover copy promises two deadly threats — Mongul and the Sun-Eater — converging in a 27-page showdown alongside Superman and the Legion. It's a wonderfully crowded, cosmic tableau that captures exactly the kind of galaxy-spanning stakes DC team-ups did so well in this era.
