Doctor Fate #8
This issue's cover by Sonny Liew is a genuine delight — rendered in the flat, earthy style of ancient Egyptian wall art, it places a modern Doctor Fate front and center in hoodie and golden helmet, flanked by two classical Egyptian deity figures, one ibis-headed and one ram-headed, while Fate himself casually holds a smartphone with a bird-logo speech bubble floating beside him. The collision of millennia-old iconography with contemporary social media imagery is playful and sharp, capturing the series' spirit of old-world myth bumping up against new-world life. With Paul Levitz writing and Ibrahim Moustafa on interiors, issue #8 of this 2016 run looks like a genuinely fun blend of ancient divine power and thoroughly modern anxieties.
