History

The issue was produced by the signature creative team of writer Paul Levitz and co-plotter/penciller Keith Giffen, with inking by Larry Mahlstedt — the same trio credited on Comet Queen's creation in all major reference sources. It appeared with a cover date of October 1983 as part of the Volume 2 series (then running under the numbering inherited from Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes), less than a year before that series was relaunched as a direct-market Baxter-paper title. Levitz had built his Legion plotting around an elaborate system of interlocking subplots — reportedly using notecards and string to track over twenty active characters — and issue #304 exemplifies that method, using a low-stakes Academy training mission as the visible surface while advancing the Shrinking Violet impostor subplot underneath it.
