Legion of Super-Heroes #23

Steve Lightle's cover for Legion of Super-Heroes #23 (June 1986) announces "Back Home in Hell!" with breathtaking intensity — a caped Legionnaire in red and blue surges upward through a firestorm while a dark-costumed female teammate battles free of writhing tentacles beside him, and looming beneath them both is an enormous, cyclopean face whose own grasping tendrils ensnare a chaotic mass of struggling figures. The sense of scale and dread Lightle achieves here is genuinely impressive, packing the entire hellish tableau — helmeted heroes, desperate bystanders, and that massive one-eyed colossus — into a single, vertigo-inducing composition that makes it very hard to put the issue back on the shelf.
