This May 1985 issue of Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes promises emotional stakes right on its cover, boldly headlined "Triumph… and Tragedy!" — a fitting tease for a team with so much riding on every mission across the cosmos. Dan Jurgens and Karl Kesel's cover composition sweeps across an arresting collage of moments: a green-skinned Legionnaire leaning forward in wide-eyed shock at the foreground, a tender exchange between a winged heroine and her companion, giant cosmic hands looming over a planet, and a crowd of blue figures reaching upward toward a radiant, winged statue. With Paul Levitz and Mindy Newell co-writing and Dan Jurgens on interior art as well, this issue brings plenty of creative firepower to the 30th century's greatest heroes.
