Doctor Fate #1
Doctor Fate Vol. 1: The Blood Price collects the first six issues of the 2016 Doctor Fate series, written by Paul Levitz with art by Sonny Liew. This arc introduces a new Doctor Fate, medical student Khalid Nassour, as he inherits the helmet of Nabu and grapples with balancing his modern life in Brooklyn against the ancient magical responsibilities thrust upon him. The story blends urban fantasy with Egyptian mythology, setting the stage for a fresh take on the iconic DC sorcerer.
In "Blood of the Pharaohs," Khalid Nasr grapples with the weight of the Helm of Thoth, resisting its pull even as it answers his desperate need. When a sudden crisis forces him to act, he finds himself guided by the ancient artifact—and his own reluctant courage—while his father’s life takes a dangerous turn miles away.
In "The Rising Tide," Khalid Nasir uses the power of Fate to pull his father from a deadly wreck, only to face the unsettling possibility that his father may never see again. After a brief lesson from Nabu, the ancient entity within the Helm of Thoth, Khalid sets out and confronts the pack of dogs responsible for the accident. Though wounded in the ensuing fight, he’s swiftly healed—leaving him with more questions than answers.
In "Confrontation," Khalid Nassour faces a harrowing choice when Bastet urges him to find Anubis, leading him to the hospital where his father lies gravely ill. As Fate battles to protect his father from the ancient god, the weight of sacrifice looms—until a desperate bargain emerges, forcing Khalid to reckon with the cost of saving the one he loves.
In "The Price," Khalid Nassour grapples with newfound vision only when wearing the helm of Fate, a power that comes at a steep cost. After returning his father home, he’s drawn back into the mystical conflict when Bastet urges him to face Anubis again—leading him into the eerie depths of the House of the Dead.
In "In the House of the Dead," Jo is drawn into the realm of the dead when Anubis brings Fate there, only to find Thoth unwilling to record judgment without Osiris. With the weight of ancient power at stake, Thoth bestows his staff upon Khalid—granting him the strength of pharaonic legacy and the divine might of Atum, enough to challenge even Anubis.
