Edited by Mrs. Henry Wood and published by Richard Bentley & Son, this volume of the Victorian periodical The Argosy contains serialized fiction, short stories, and poetry. The featured serial is "Mrs. Raven's Temptation," by the author of "Dr. Hardy's Marriage," illustrated by Robert Barnes. The narrative follows the Connell household as a midnight scream of distress disrupts the parsonage. When Mrs. Connell and Miss Cleare observe a mysterious man crossing the garden toward the house who vanishes at the window's light, suspicion spreads among family members. Subsequent chapters involve missing signet rings, detectives, sealed packets, anonymous letters, telegrams from court, and widening investigation into mysterious circumstances surrounding characters including James, Nurse Hannah, and Charity Hale, culminating in revelations of secrets and reconciliation. Additional contents include poems, essays on Jane Austen by Alice King, and numerous short stories by various authors.
Each page has its own page — the cartoon, who’s in it, and what the satire means.
