Joseph Henry Simon — born Hymie Simon on October 11, 1913, and raised to become one of the most versatile figures the American comic book industry has ever produced — wore nearly every hat the medium offered: writer, artist, editor, and publisher. He died on December 14, 2011.

Simon entered comics during the Golden Age and quickly distinguished himself as an editor, becoming the first to hold that role at Timely Comics, the company that would eventually grow into Marvel. His most consequential partnership was with artist Jack Kirby, and together the two men shaped the medium in ways that are still felt today. Their most celebrated co-creation, Captain America, remains one of superhero comics' most enduring characters. The Simon-Kirby team also produced a remarkable range of work for DC Comics, including contributions to the Sandman feature and the co-creation of the Newsboy Legion and Boy Commandos, as well as Manhunter. For other publishers they developed Boys' Ranch, Fighting American, and the Fly.

Among their most historically significant achievements was pioneering the romance comics genre in the late 1940s — titles such as Young Romance reflect this period — while also helping establish early horror comics. Simon later built a career in advertising and commercial art, and founded the satirical magazine Sick in 1960, stewarding it for more than a decade. He was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1999.
