Janine meets American soldier Fred in France during the war. Afterward, she travels to the USA to marry him, but Fred is killed in a freak accident on the docks as she arrives. To avoid returning to France, Janine accepts the marriage proposal of wealthy French immigrant Aristide. He installs her on the Cummings farm, where she falls in love with Tony. However, Aristide returns and she agrees to wed him out of gratitude. A dream about Fred convinces her that she should marry the man she really loves: Tony.
