Wally Montel met Lucy Barton when he was nine. After grammar school, they saw little of each other until high school, when Wally interrupted Mike Beeler harassing Lucy in the hallway between class. Love stirred again and they began dating until Wally's anger drove them apart. Lucy began dating Harold Hayes, even though Lucy feared that Wally would get angry and attacked Harold. When Lucy arrives for her date with Harold, she sees him rushing off to stop a fight between Mike and Wally. Wally realizes he has been a jerk, and steps aside for Lucy and Harold plan their wedding.
