“Marriage Contract”

"Marriage Contract" is a standout moment in early romance comics, written and drawn by Jack Kirby with inks by Joe Simon, capturing a vibrant, earnest clash of independence and affection. Bobbie, a fiercely ambitious female athlete determined to prove herself as an architect, faces off against Larry’s love with a daring mountain-climbing challenge—only to find her heart shifting when he’s injured. The cover by Kirby and Simon perfectly frames the story’s emotional stakes, all rendered in the distinctive, dynamic style of the era.

Female athlete Bobbie says “no man will ever tame me!” and vows to become an architect “as good as any man!” During summer vacation she meets Larry, who says he loves her. Bobbie will “never submit to becoming a disheveled drudge and humble wife as long as I’ve a chance for a profession that will bring me respect and dignity!” Bobbie challenges Larry to a mountain-climbing contest, but when he falls and breaks his leg, she realizes she loves him.
