Charlie Chan investigates the murder of Professor Wheeler, a renowned astronomer, after discovering a pen-knife used as the murder weapon left behind by the killer. With the help of his Number One Son, Chan examines the knife under magnification and uses Chinese detective methods to identify the murderer and prevent further violence. The issue also features a backup story about Keri Krane, Boss of the Phoenix Detective Agency, a policewoman who established her own detective agency in Los Angeles after her sister's death in the line of duty, as she takes on cases including a situation at Santa Monica.
