In "null," the fugitive Measles finds temporary shelter with a family living in a railroad maintenance shed, quietly helping them by sharing his ration book and cash for groceries and cigars. When Dick Tracy and Sam close in, a tense gun battle erupts—Measles escapes briefly, only to stumble onto a moving train bound for California, where he unexpectedly encounters Vitamin Flintheart and Snowflake, on their way to make a movie.
In "Tricks of the Trade," Vitamin thinks he's bested Measles with a well-placed bottle of cognac, leaving the unconscious crook in a locked compartment before rushing off for help. But as the door clicks shut behind him, Measles stirs—wide awake and ready to turn the tables.
In "Measles Escapes," the fugitive criminal narrowly evades capture by leaping from a moving train, only to be swept into a sudden flood. Stranded and desperate, he grabs hold of a drifting boat, only to be carried toward a lone barn where he steals a horse and rides off into the storm-ravaged countryside.
