“Hope Chest”

In "Hope Chest," Laurie’s engagement to Hal hits a rocky patch when his frugality clashes with her desire for a ring. When she meets Steve, who claims his ex-girlfriend Ruth dumped him, she agrees to a temporary date to make Ruth jealous—only to learn Steve’s story was a lie. As emotions run high and secrets unravel, Laurie must decide what matters most. The story unfolds with quiet sincerity, drawn with expressive detail by Pete Riss, and features a striking cover by Bill Draut and Joe Simon.

Laurie is engaged to Hal, but he’s financially “sensible” and doesn’t want to spend money on an engagement ring for her. Laurie, ashamed she has no ring, meets Steve, who is selling one because girlfriend Ruth dumped him. He offers Laurie a deal if she’ll date him to make Ruth jealous; Laurie agrees but Ruth doesn’t care. Laurie buys the ring anyway. Hal is angry that Laurie spent $200 on “nonsense” and says “if I marry you, you’ll throw my money away!” They break up. Steve appears and says he lied about Ruth just to spend time with Laurie. Laurie and Steve have “a wonderful future ahead.”
