He went on to become one of the more versatile and prolific American comic book writers of his generation, accumulating credits across more than 450 issues between 1997 and 2026, with work spanning both major publishers and licensed properties.

Van Lente built his reputation on titles that blend genuine mythological and genre knowledge with sharp, often irreverent humor. He is perhaps best known for *Incredible Hercules*, which recast the classic Marvel demigod as a boisterous, intellectually surprising lead rather than a supporting bruiser.
