“Three Rings...Of Danger!”

In "Three Rings...Of Danger!", the Thing unexpectedly becomes ruler of Monster Isle after the Mole Man is ousted by his own followers—only to find his gentle nature clashes with the island’s more aggressive inhabitants. When the Mole Man returns with the Lava Men to reclaim his throne, the Thing insists on a fair vote, and the monsters choose their former king by a landslide. Written by Fred Van Lente and illustrated by Clay Mann, with inks by Terry Pallot and colors by Lee Loughridge, this 2007 flip magazine tale blends humor and heart in a quirky, monster-packed adventure. The cover, a dynamic split design by Patrick Scherberger and Carlo Pagulayan with inks by Roland Paris and Jeffrey Huet, captures the clash of titans in bold, expressive style.

The Mole Man's followers eject him from Monster Isle and ask the Thing to be their new king. The Thing agrees, but he turns out to be too gentle for the monsters' liking. The Mole Man comes to reclaim his kingdom with the help of the Lava Men, but the Thing demands they put the matter to a vote; the entire population of Monster Isle votes for the Mole Man, so the Thing leaves.
