“King of the Monsters”

In "King of the Monsters," the Thing is unexpectedly crowned ruler of Monster Isle after the Mole Man is ousted by his own followers, but his gentle nature clashes with the monsters' expectations. When the Mole Man returns with the Lava Men to reclaim his throne, the Thing insists on a fair vote—only for the entire island to choose the Mole Man again, leading to a quiet departure. Written by Fred Van Lente and illustrated by Clay Mann, with inks by Terry Pallot, colors by Lee Loughridge, and letters by Dave Sharpe, this 2007 tale blends humor and heart, all wrapped in a striking cover by Carlo Pagulayan and Jeffrey Huet.

The Mole Man's followers eject him from Monster Isle and ask the Thing to be their new king. The Thing agrees, but he turns out to be too gentle for the monsters' liking. The Mole Man comes to reclaim his kingdom with the help of the Lava Men, but the Thing demands they put the matter to a vote; the entire population of Monster Isle votes for the Mole Man, so the Thing leaves.
