The Mocking Dead #1
Dynamite's 2013 horror-comedy series kicks off with a cover that doubles as an in-world public health document — a deadpan CDC-style pamphlet from the fictional "Center for Deadly Disease Control and Prevention," complete with a world map and five illustrated prevention icons (a toothbrush, handwashing, a nose, a snorkel mask, and a toilet). The pitch-perfect parody design, rendered by Bill Tortolini, sets the tone immediately: whatever outbreak "The Mocking Dead" refers to, the recommended countermeasures are gloriously absurd. Writer Fred Van Lente and artist Max Dunbar promise a series that treats zombie apocalypse tropes with exactly as much seriousness as a government brochure about snorkeling hygiene.
