This bound volume of the London literary magazine The Argosy is edited by Mrs. Henry Wood. The issue contains the serialized novel The White Witch, illustrated by M. Ellen Edwards, depicting a Lancashire gentleman's unexpected remarriage. Godfrey Mayne learns his widowed father has married Mrs. Dixon, a widow met abroad in Nice, in Paris—a marriage that angers Godfrey, who suspects opportunism and threatens petty sabotage upon her arrival. The serial progresses through investigations, mysteries, locked doors, and moonlit encounters at abbeys and galleries. Additional contents include the three-part "Johnny Ludlow's Papers: Roger Bevere," a nonfiction illustrated article on the Channel Islands by Charles W. Wood, and numerous short stories and poems by credited authors. Pieces include "The Colonel's New Year" by G. B. Stuart, "Fifty Pounds Reward" by Mrs. Douglas, "A Dangerous Crossing" by Lady Virginia Sandars, and "Dr. Ball" by the author of Molly Bawn.
Each page has its own page — the cartoon, who’s in it, and what the satire means.
