Gerard Jones was born on July 10, 1957, and built a substantial career as both a comic book scripter and a nonfiction writer focused on American entertainment media. He broke into comics in the late 1980s and over the following decades accumulated credits on nearly 670 issues spanning work released between 1987 and 2021.
The Shadow Strikes #2 (1989)
At DC Comics, Jones became a reliable presence on the Green Lantern and Justice League titles — Justice League Europe among his more prominent assignments — and also contributed to Wonder Man at Marvel. His adaptations of Rumiko Takahashi's manga series, including Ranma ½ and InuYasha, represent some of his most voluminous output, introducing those properties to English-language readers. At Malibu Comics he co-created the superhero Prime, one of the publisher's more recognizable characters from that era.
Crying Freeman #1 (1989)
Beyond scripting, Jones wrote nonfiction examining the history and culture of American popular entertainment, work that earned him recognition as a thoughtful commentator on the medium and its broader context.
Crying Freeman #2 (1989)
In 2018, Jones was convicted of possession of child pornography and sentenced to six years in prison. The conviction cast a long shadow over his body of work and prompted significant reassessment of his legacy within the comics industry and among readers who had followed his career.
