“Gone Ape!”

Part three of the "Gorilla Warfare" arc brings some genuinely unsettling tension to Green Lantern #31, as the cover — rendered by M. D. Bright and Romeo Tanghal — shows a wild-eyed Hal Jordan grabbing a distressed Flash by the wrist, his ring hand crackling with energy while a diminutive figure in a suit and a looming gorilla silhouette lurk ominously in the background. The single word "Mutation!" blazoned across the cover says plenty about the strange forces at work here, with that swirling pink-and-yellow energy suggesting something has gone very wrong with our emerald guardian. With Gerard Jones and Mark Waid sharing writing duties, this four-part saga clearly isn't short on ambition — or on hero-versus-hero friction.
