“The Widening Gyre”

Part 4 of the "Break Downs" crossover, this September 1991 issue presents a genuinely unsettling image: a massive, dark-suited villain dominates the foreground, cradling a globe-like object whose yellow-eyed visor reflects a trapped cluster of JLE members — including Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, and a white-haired woman — scrambling in obvious panic within his grasp. Darick Robertson and John Beatty's cover composition does something clever, making the heroes look almost like toys caught inside a snow globe, which says plenty about the power dynamic at play. With Giffen, Jones, Robertson, and Beatty all on board, "The Widening Gyre" promises the sharp wit and genuine tension this era of Justice League Europe delivered so reliably.
