Sandu Florea

Born in Romania on June 28, 1946, Sandu Florea trained as an architect before finding his calling in sequential art. During the 1970s he was an active figure in Romanian science fiction circles, and he went on to produce comic albums — most notably *Galbar* — that reportedly made him one of the very few artists to earn a consistent living from comics under Communist rule. He was also a prolific contributor to Romanian children's magazines, though censors curtailed his work once he publicly announced plans to emigrate to the United States. He departed shortly after the 1989 Revolution and quickly established himself in the American industry, beginning a professional run that spans from 1992 into the mid-2020s across more than 400 credited issues.

Florea built his reputation primarily as an inker, lending his line work to high-profile projects at Marvel and DC Comics alike. Among his most visible contributions are *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*, *X-Men: The End*, *Batman R.I.P.*, and *Batman: Battle for the Cowl*; the Batman title stands as his most frequently credited work in the catalog. He has also worked extensively on *Elektra*, *Deathstroke*, and *Suicide Squad*, among others.

Throughout his American career, Florea has remained connected to Romania, actively promoting the American comics idiom there. He has been recognized as one of the most prominent Romanian artists working in the mainstream comics industry.
