“Freefall, Conclusion”

Titled "Burial at Sea," this September 2008 installment of Nightwing wraps up the "Freefall" arc with a cover by Andy Kubert that's genuinely hard to look away from — Dick Grayson in his black-and-blue suit sinks through murky depths, breath escaping in desperate bubbles, while ghostly, monstrous figures swirl and claw through the water all around him. The sense of dread is palpable, with a decaying face looming large above and spectral creatures pressing in from every angle, making the ocean feel less like a setting and more like a trap. Written by Peter J. Tomasi with interior art by Don Kramer and Sandu Florea, this is a striking closer to what looks like one of Nightwing's more harrowing story runs of the era.
