Ed McGuinness

Ed McGuinness is an American comic book artist and penciller born in 1974, whose bold, kinetic visual style has made him one of the more recognizable superhero artists working today. He broke into the industry in the mid-1990s and built a substantial body of work across more than three decades, accumulating credits on well over 350 issues through the mid-2020s.

McGuinness is perhaps best known for his extended runs on Superman, Superman/Batman, Hulk, and The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as notable work on Deadpool, Nova, and Avengers. His art blends the monumental, larger-than-life energy associated with Jack Kirby with the expressive character detail reminiscent of Arthur Adams — a combination his frequent collaborator, writer Jeph Loeb, has specifically highlighted as central to McGuinness's appeal. That partnership with Loeb produced some of his most celebrated work, combining punchy storytelling with figures that feel genuinely powerful on the page.

McGuinness has worked closely with inker Dexter Vines across much of his career, and the two developed a recognizable collaborative identity, signing their shared cover work with the combined signature "EdEx." That creative shorthand reflects the consistency and chemistry of their working relationship. McGuinness has remained an active presence in mainstream superhero comics well into the 2020s, demonstrating a durability that speaks to the enduring popularity of his approach to the genre.
