This bound volume of the British literary periodical features Mrs. Henry Wood's serial novel "Court Netherleigh," illustrated by M. Ellen Edwards, detailing life at an aristocratic English estate in Berkshire with characters including Miss Margery Upton (the property's owner), her young nieces Frances and Adela Chenevix, and their neighbors. The volume contains numerous short stories and sketches by various authors including Charles W. Wood and Alice King, covering diverse subjects: historical figures (Madame de Pompadour, Madame de Staël), local English scenes (Devonshire Combe, Salisbury and Stonehenge), and regional customs (Irish Shrove-tide). Johnny Ludlow's Papers contribute several pieces including "Down a Salt Mine" and "The Fortune-Teller." The collection includes original poetry by period contributors, travel writing, and domestic narratives typical of Victorian-era periodical literature.
