Carlos Ezquerra
1947–2018
Carlos Sánchez Ezquerra was born on 12 November 1947 in Spain and went on to become one of the most consequential artists in British comics history, working prolifically in the medium until his death on 1 October 2018. He is best remembered as the co-creator of Judge Dredd, the dystopian lawman who became the defining character of the long-running British anthology 2000 AD.
Ezquerra made his way into the British comics industry during the 1970s, contributing to titles such as Battle Picture Weekly before 2000 AD launched in 1977 and gave him his most enduring platform. His visual designs — gritty, kinetic, and richly detailed — established much of the aesthetic DNA that would come to define that publication's sensibility. Beyond Judge Dredd, he was closely associated with Strontium Dog, another fan-favorite series that showcased his skill with science fiction worlds and morally complex characters.
Over a career spanning from 1976 into the 2020s, Ezquerra accumulated credits across more than 500 issues, working as artist, colorist, inker, and letterer. His contributions ranged across 2000 AD, Judge Dredd, Battle Picture Weekly and Valiant, and Fury, among others. His legacy rests on world-building imagery that has influenced generations of artists working in genre comics on both sides of the Atlantic.
