About this Issue

Prog 1530 arrived just weeks after 2000 AD's 30th-anniversary issue (prog 1526), placing it at the heart of an editorially ambitious moment for Rebellion's weekly anthology. Its Judge Dredd component falls within the celebrated 'Origins' epic — John Wagner's sweeping 23-part backstory that for the first time filled in the full pre-history of Mega-City One, the Atomic Wars, and young Cadets Joe and Rico Dredd's role in deposing the corrupt President Robert L. Booth. Running concurrently in the same prog are ongoing chapters of Nikolai Dante and a Bill Savage serial, making this a dense anthology snapshot of 2000 AD at the height of its post-30th-anniversary creative renewal under editor Matt Smith.

History

Prog 1530 was published on 28 March 2007 by Rebellion Developments, the Oxford-based company that had owned 2000 AD since 2000, with Matt Smith serving as editor (a role he had held since 2002). It appeared in the direct wake of the 30th-anniversary prog 1526, which had launched new arcs of Nikolai Dante (by Robbie Morrison and Simon Fraser) and Savage (by Pat Mills and Charlie Adlard); prog 1530 continued those freshly relaunched storylines alongside the climactic stretch of Wagner's 'Origins' epic that had begun building from prog 1500.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published 28 March 2007 by Rebellion Developments as part of 2000 AD's weekly anthology run, just four progs after the landmark 30th-anniversary issue (prog 1526).
  • The Judge Dredd content in this prog sits within John Wagner's 'Origins' epic (beginning around prog 1500), a 23-part story that was the first to comprehensively detail Dredd's pre-history, including the Atomic Wars and the deposition of President Robert L. Booth.
  • Cadet Rico Dredd and President Robert L. Booth appear as characters in this issue — both are central figures in the 'Origins' flashback sequences, which depicted the young clone cadets' role in restoring order after Booth's catastrophic World War III.
  • The strip 'Savage,' featuring Bill Savage — the guerrilla fighter from the original 1977 Invasion! strip — was in a new arc by Pat Mills and Charlie Adlard that had relaunched at the 30th-anniversary prog, deepening ties between the Savage timeline and the broader 2000 AD universe.
  • Nikolai Dante, the swashbuckling series created by Robbie Morrison and Simon Fraser in 1997, was running a new storyline in this prog following its fresh arc launched at prog 1526.
  • Finnigan Sinister, one half of the gunshark duo from Dan Abnett's Sinister Dexter (introduced 1996), is indexed in this issue, confirming the strip was part of the anthology lineup at this time.
  • Samantha Slade ('Romero's Slayer') — a recurring character associated with the Sinister Dexter corner of the 2000 AD universe — also appears, along with a range of named Judges (Curzon, Ozman, Renga, Sanchez, Waters, Logan, Cohn, Solomon) attesting to the large supporting cast developed within the 'Origins' storyline.
  • Matt Smith was editor of 2000 AD at the time of publication, continuing a tenure that began in 2002 under the Rebellion Developments ownership era.
