Prog 381 of 2000 AD hits newsstands in September 1984 with a striking Carlos Ezquerra cover for the Strontium Dog feature "Mutie and the Beast" — a blue-tinted, muscular figure thrusts a blade toward a grimacing, goggled mutant who cries out "It's not real! It's all in my mind!" The header promises the delights of Zarjaz, Scrotnig, and Ghafflebette, which is very much the flavour of a weekly that never takes itself too seriously while delivering genuine thrills. At 22p of Earth money, it's a fine slice of British comics at their most inventive.
