Sutton broke into the industry in the late 1960s, quickly establishing himself at both Marvel Comics and Warren Publishing, where his expressive, atmospheric linework proved ideally suited to Warren's black-and-white horror magazines. His name is closely associated with titles such as *Eerie* and *Creepy*, and he holds a particular place in comics history as the first story-artist to bring Vampirella to the page — a character who would go on to endure for decades. At Marvel, he contributed to *Doctor Strange*, lending the character's mystical world a suitably unsettling visual texture.

Sutton's credits were remarkably broad. Across 358 issues catalogued between 1967 and 2024, he worked as artist, inker, colorist, letterer, and writer — a versatility reflected in appearances across genres, from DC's *House of Mystery* to *Star Trek* comics adaptations. He occasionally published under the pseudonyms Sean Todd and Dementia, names that hint at the gleeful darkness he brought to much of his work.

His legacy rests on a body of work that consistently balanced craft with genuine eeriness, and his early Vampirella pages remain among the most discussed debut visuals in horror comics.
