Matthew Sturges
Matthew Sturges was born in October 1970 in the United States and built a career as a writer of comics and fantasy novels, working primarily within the Vertigo and DC Comics lines. Breaking into the industry around 2006, Sturges quickly found a foothold collaborating with Bill Willingham on *Jack of Fables*, a spinoff of Willingham's celebrated *Fables* universe that earned an Eisner Award nomination and became one of Sturges's most recognized credits. Over a productive stretch running through 2020, Sturges accumulated writing credits on more than 200 issues across a notably varied range of titles. Beyond *Jack of Fables*, he took on *House of Mystery* and handled the comics adaptation *Fables: The Wolf Among Us*, while also contributing to superhero fare including *JSA All-Stars*, *Shadowpact*, and *The Blue Beetle* — demonstrating a comfort moving between the mythic, the fantastical, and the four-color mainstream. His work tends to blend genre storytelling with character-driven undercurrents, qualities that served both his comics output and his parallel work in fantasy prose fiction. Sturges remains a distinctive voice in contemporary comics writing, with the Eisner-nominated *Jack of Fables* standing as the signature achievement of his earlier career.
