“Lamia”

Vertigo's Fairest takes a darker turn with issue #7, and Adam Hughes's cover leaves no doubt about the tone — a glamorous dark-haired woman raises a revolver overhead while blood drips from her mouth, her expression cool and unsettling amid a scene scattered with crimson stains and a clawed hand reaching in from the left. Matthew Sturges and Shawn McManus bring the story arc "Lamia" to life in this November 2012 chapter, suggesting folklore and menace woven together in equal measure. It's a beautifully rendered package that makes it clear this corner of the Fables universe has very sharp teeth.
