Barry Windsor-Smith

Barry Windsor-Smith was born Barry Smith on 25 May 1949 in Britain and has spent much of his career producing work for American publishers that would cement his reputation as one of comics' most distinctive visual artists. He first drew widespread attention through his run on Marvel's *Conan the Barbarian* between 1970 and 1973, where his style — rooted in fine-art draftsmanship and growing increasingly ornate — set a new standard for fantasy illustration in mainstream comics.

His later Marvel output included the "Lifedeath" stories with writer Chris Claremont for *Uncanny X-Men*, focusing on a depowered Storm, and the 1991 serial "Weapon X," which remains among the most viscerally striking Marvel stories of its era. He also contributed to a *Machine Man* limited series alongside Herb Trimpe and Tom DeFalco, and a *Thing* story for *Marvel Fanfare*.

After departing Marvel, Windsor-Smith served as creative director at Valiant Comics, illustrating the relaunched Solar and co-creating Archer and Armstrong. He later co-created the vampire character Rune with Chris Ulm for Malibu's Ultraverse. His anthology series *Barry Windsor-Smith: Storyteller* through Dark Horse was cancelled after nine issues, but subsequent work appeared through Fantagraphics, including *Adastra in Africa* and the art retrospectives *Opus*. His 360-page *Monsters* — originally conceived in the mid-1980s as a Hulk story — was published in 2021 and earned him three Eisner Awards in 2022: Best Graphic Novel, Best Letterer, and Best Writer/Artist.
