The Chronicles of Conan #2
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis second volume of Dark Horse's comprehensive reprint series collects issues #5 through #8 of the original Marvel Comics run of Conan the Barbarian, adapting Robert E. Howard's classic tales. The collection includes the title story "Rogues in the House," along with other early adventures like "The God in the Bowl" and "The Tower of the Elephant," all featuring the iconic artwork of Barry Windsor-Smith. These stories showcase Conan's early years as a wandering thief in the Hyborian Age, with lush, detailed art that defined the character's look for a generation.
In "The Garden of Fear," Conan rises as Captain of the royal guard in the city-state of Zahmahn and finds himself entangled in a web of power and passion with Queen Fatima. When a scandalous moment with the servant girl Yaila leads to their imprisonment in a dungeon guarded by a monstrous entity, their survival hinges on a desperate choice. Written by Roy Thomas and illustrated with masterful detail by Barry Windsor-Smith—whose cover pencils and inks bring the story’s grim atmosphere to life—this issue blends political intrigue and visceral peril in a tale where loyalty is tested and crowns are forged in darkness.

Conan becomes Captain of the royal guard in the small city-state of Zahmahn as well as the lover of Queen Fatima. When the Queen catches Conan with the servant girl Yaila in a delicate situation, she leaves them in the dungeon to be devoured by the Dweller in the Dark. They manage to escape, however, and Conan throws the Queen to the monster. According to tradition, Zahmahn can only be ruled by a female sovereign, so Conan nominates Yaila as the new queen.
